Songs of the 1970’s Lyrics, Volume I
1. Seems We Never Said Goodbye
Copyright © 1970 Greg Bullen
Seems the words have all been spoken
Yet I stay, I wonder why?
From the way your hands are shaking
I can tell that you’ll break down upon awaking
Please forgive me
For I know you never will forget me
You can see me if you ever need me
Seems We Never Said Goodbye.
All our hopes and dreams are changing
To quench the fire of yesterday
Now our lives need rearranging
I don’t know if I’ll ever find the way, oh darling
Please forgive me
For I know I never will forget you
Can I see you if I ever need you
Seems We Never Said Goodbye.
3. She’s A Woman

She’s A Woman
I should have spent more time
Pleasin’ her, it’s hard to do.
She’s A Woman
I can’t defend myself
I did just what I had to do.
Several letters came addressed to me
From a man who thinks I’m where I want to be
Everyone assumes it, why can’t we?
Is it so hard to see we’re not alone?
She’s A Woman
She doesn’t sleep at night
Unless that light’s turned down so low.
She’s A Woman
And everything I say or do she’s got to know.
Runnin’ east to west or round and round
She’s got to find it where she can’t be bound
Some can run it fine, but I have found
That it’s the longest way back to the ground.
At the close of day she comes to me
Bearing scars of her reality
She’s been taken but she cannot see.
5. Fantasia

Fantasia covers my eyes
The world can plainly see
Earth lady, please hypnotize
I need your company.
I waste the time so fast
I can’t believe I’m here
Fantasia, won’t you disappear?
Send your halo down to find somebody else
I need love, and even you up above
Won’t help me find myself.
In the morning I
Wake to the sound of lies
That change beyond control
Fantasia’s closed her eyes
And let the demons go,
And I’ve got to open wide
To see the other side at all
Fantasia, let my lady call.
Send your halo down and wrap it around somebody else
I need love, even you up above
Won’t ease my mind,
I’ve lost so much time.
7. Someone Plays A Lie
Copyright © 1972 Greg Bullen
I used to think I’d go to heaven
And the sign would say “Welcome home!”
And all the angels would remember
That I’d learned of love and patience
on my own.
It’s impossible to do
It’s impossible to feel
It’s impossible to know
When everyday Someone Plays A Lie.
I used to sing when I was younger
for I didn’t care what anyone might say.
But now I think I’m going under
For it’s getting hard to see the right of way.
It’s impossible to see
It’s impossible to feel
It’s impossible to know
‘Cause everyday Someone Plays A Lie.
I’ve heard the angry, worn out speeches
Of the little men in their Sunday suits
They come to jeer the man who teaches
And they make a star out of anyone who shoots.
It’s impossible to see
It’s impossible to feel
It’s impossible to know
‘Cause everyday Someone Plays A Lie.
And any day now, I shall find out why.
9. Little Lady

Little Lady
You appear so ordinary and still you carry
Beauty wrapped inside you like a dream.
I was hurting
But it seems like you’ve known heartache and still I wonder
Have you heard the thunder?
Have you seen?
Little Lady, please don’t go
Until I find out if I can see you more
Lord, it’s in your face
And I’ve no place to go.
Well Little lady, now,
Somethin’ tells me I’ve found a reason
Don’t deny me, for I believe in love.
10. Your Fading Smile
Copyright © 1972 Greg Bullen
So you left your home to heed the call
And you’ve heard the lions’ roar
Now you don’t know where you fit at all,
I can hear your questions
I don’t know the answers
I just think about Your Fading Smile.
So you try to give them one more chance
And you love them in their lies
But they took your love and made you dance,
Now you hear their questions
They don’t know the answers
They just think about Your Fading Smile.
When your baby’s gone away
Does your mind return to yesterday?
Hiding there in all the years
Do you find yourself among the fear?
Home, my lady, love your baby’s company
Home, my lady, you’ll find that maybe you can see.
Whoa, oh no, whoa, oh no.
12. It’s All Right Now
Copyright © 1972 Greg Bullen
It’s All Right Now
You’re at it again
It’s All Right Now
There’s no one to blame;
Though you’re worried about your life
It’s a common complaint
Don’t you know it isn’t right
If you feel it’s too late.
It’s All Right Now
You’ve started again
It’s All Right Now
Just take it the same;
Feelin’ up and feelin’ down
They’re a common refrain
Take a look out all around
Yes, it all looks the same to me
The morning will come back, you see.
Out in the courtyard to find all the ladies,
Hands in your pockets, alone
Time to relive all the life you’ve been wastin’ at home.
Searchin’ for love when you’ve lost all your feeling,
Greedy for money and health
Getting ahead will just put you in bed by yourself.
Though you’re worried about your life,
It’s a common complaint
Don’t you know it isn’t right
If you feel it’s too late to change
The morning will come back again.
Getting ahead will just put you in bed
Won’t you please take your mind off yourself?
2. Livin’ Without You
Copyright © 1970 Greg Bullen
Sometimes I sit down, think about just what I’ve got
I’ve lived for twenty years, and I ain’t got a lot
You know the only thing I really like to do
Is write a song a day and sing it just for you.
‘Cause I love you
I been thinkin’ I love you
Don’t like Livin’ Without You.
Sometimes my mind is achin’ I can’t find my way
I have to leave my writing for another day
It seems I can’t do nothin’ but I want to say
I’d rather be with you to pass the time away.
‘Cause I love you
Can’t help thinkin’ I love you
Don’t like Livin’ Without You.
Those heavy thoughts that I been thinkin’
Just got me nowhere but slowly sinkin’
By the way can you tell that I grew some older
‘Cause the days are colder and the nights
Are much too long.
4. The Savior
Copyright © 1970 Greg Bullen
Heard a teacher in devotion
Facing no one save the floor
Tell the children no emotion
Ever opened any door.
And The Savior isn’t certain
Did he hear a hungry cry?
And The Savior draws the curtain
It was just a lullaby.
So I’ll take a small vacation
Sell my portrait to a queen
Don’t it seem like a ball?
Nobody has to help me at all.
Found my lady
Kept my secrets safe at home
Held my lady
Thought her love would keep me warm.
Once I found my love in mourning
Seems her life had passed away
And I thought I heard her warning
But I really could not say.
We have felt and spoke of nothing
Done to no one as we should
Yet we dare to speak of loving
As if we understood.
Our emotions we have buried
In the struggle just to live
But this passion that we carry
Is all we have to give.
And The Savior isn’t certain
Did he hear a hungry cry?
And The Savior draws the curtain
It was just a lullaby.
So I’ll take a small vacation
Sell my portrait to a queen
Don’t it seem like a ball?
Nobody has to help me at all.
Find your lady
Keep your secrets safe at home
Hold your lady
Hope her love can keep you warm.
6. Yale (Sailor)
Copyright © 1971 Greg Bullen
I was the loner and you were the action
You drew the factions to you,
I spent the evenings like I was in prison
You thought that I wanted to.
Oh, Sailor
Where do you think you belong?
Oh, Sailor
Who’ll take your place while you’re gone?
Out on the sidewalk that rolled by the factory
We sang exactly in tune,
Back in the caverns of cinder and paper
We tried to imagine a room.
Oh, Sailor
Where do you think you belong?
Oh, Sailor
Who’ll take your place while you’re gone?
To hold on to something that you can’t believe in
Just ain’t very pleasin’ to you,
It’s seeing yourself as the pleasure you gave me
That’s much more important to do.
Oh, Sailor
Where do you think you belong?
Oh, Sailor
[What made you think I’m so strong?]
8. Port and Me
Copyright © 1971 Greg Bullen
Port and me we'd watch the breeze
That fed upon the forest in the summertime,
Father sunk near poverty, Port didn't care
His head was strong and so was mine.
In the morning we would steal away
Port would smile at me as if to say:
"It's alright, we'll come back and make it right
We haven't really gone away."
Evenin' came and evenin' went
We had our orders: get a job and pull your share,
I was up most of the night
List'nin' to the screamin' in Ma's room upstairs.
When I woke Lord knows I felt so low
Port would take my hand and we would go,
I don't know how long,
We'd be back before too long,
We hadn't really gone away.
'Twas in the summer long ago
I'd turned eighteen, looked around, but Port was gone.
Not a word he spoke to me
Without a sign he left me here to carry on.
If I could make a wish some summer day
I'd wish for Port to come back, right away,
So he could say "All right,
Everything will be all right,
I haven't really gone away."
11. An Autumn Plea
Copyright © 1976 Greg Bullen
Summer’s lost the will to stay,
Falling leaves are on the way,
So tell me what you think is wrong
With us all?
(A shadow’s darkening my door,
The wind blows colder than before,
I wonder what you have in store
For us all.)
Then send,
Send me to a dream I want no choice.
Send,
Send me indisposed, without a voice.
And now I hear the children shout,
That spring has turned herself about,
Oh, won’t you let your secrets out
To us all?
And still I hear him say with pride,
That love has never been his bride
[So cut him loose, don’t let it ride
Or we fall.]
Then send,
Send me to a dream I want no choice.
Send, Send me indisposed, without a voice.
I’ve heard the secrets of the wise,
They feel like raindrops in my eyes,
So tell me what you think is wrong
With us all?
With us all?
