Songs of the 1970’s Lyrics, Volume II
1. Caravan

Accommodations, economy
I think I’ve seen this place before,
The combination was just too much for me
I can’t eat it anymore.
Now back in town we had to stop for gas
The village seemed a little cold,
Now all around me I keep hearin’ them laugh
It’s good they’ve got someplace to go.
Ridin’ across the land
Watchin’ my fingers do the job, it’s sleight of hand,
Making our one-day plans
Sneakin’ ‘em in, the cat, the dog,
In a Caravan.
Imagination has carried me away
Or maybe somethin’; in the air,
[My reputation], I mailed it home today
The weight was more than I could bear.
Ridin’ across the land
Stretchin’ my legs, it’s been so long since we began,
Making our one night stand
Sneakin’ ‘em in, the cat, the dog
In a Caravan.
3. I’ve Got To Lay My Troubles Down
Copyright © 1978 Greg Bullen
I’ve Got To Lay My Troubles Down
And start living
There’s nothing giving.
I’ve got to let those scruples go
‘Cause they don’t help me
They just get me in trouble.
I’ve Got To Lay My Troubles Down
I want to be happy,
Got to turn my head around
I’m losin’ ground in a hurry,
There’s someone better off than me.
Forget about your morality
It isn’t working
‘Cause no one will love me.
And honesty must be set aside
‘Cause no one believes me
And I’ve got feelings to think of.
I’ve Got To Lay My Troubles Down
I want to be happy,
Got to turn my head around
I’m losin’ ground in a hurry,
There’s someone better off than me.
5. The Waiting Game

Friends send me letters
They’ll come and see me real soon,
When things have gotten better
Like on a Sunday afternoon.
The times keep a changin’
But people stay the same,
Buried alive in The Waiting Game.
Progress comes slowly
Or sometimes not at all,
The poor and the lonely
Both are standin’ in the hall.
“The rich just keep getting’ richer”
I heard someone exclaim,
I guess they’ve got no time for The Waiting Game.
Now if you see me just hangin’ around
I’m just tryin’ to make it ‘til my feet are on the ground,
Plans for the future, you know I’ve got a few
I’d love to get rollin’ but I don’t know what to do.
Back in the shelter of my humble, warm abode
The places around me began to look a little old,
I packed up a suitcase
And though I felt somewhat ashamed
I turned and walked away from The Waiting Game.
7. Homesick
Copyright © 1976 Greg Bullen
There’s a chill in the air
And a memory everywhere
Of the night when our affair was young,
Of that house on the hill
The colored glass on the windowsill
We should be livin’ there still
I guess the time has come.
To leave all the friends we’ve made but haven’t used
To leave all those games we played of subterfuge
No, I’m not confused
I’m just Homesick
I remember the place
Where I first saw your face
We were quite a disgrace I’ve been told,
‘Cause when you sat down in that chair
I was already there,
We were quite the pair
With our cheeks all a glow.
So how did we end up here?
I guess we just liked the view.
Why did we disappear?
I had so much to do without starting anew
Now I’m homesick.
I still think on the time
You went home so resigned
But your hat you left behind on my floor.
Now you weren’t in such a rush
You just needed a crutch
You must have loved me very much
To have come back for more.
Let’s leave while there’s still someone there to go back to
It’s been long enough
I’ve been through this school and I feel like a fool
‘Cause I’m homesick
And so are you.
9. One Way Streets

Hey! If you’ve got money, honey
And you’ve got places to go
I want to go.
You! You can hear me talkin’, you’re walkin’
I hear you sayin’ as you go: “He sunk so low.”
My time is through again
A time of tellin’ lies.
Falling down One Way Streets
Flying with no relief to you.
Hey! Don’t you think I’m crazy? Or just lazy?
To sing this song here on the street
But I like to eat.
And you! You used to love me, you knew me
When I was sure and unafraid
I had it made.
My time is through again
A time of tellin’ lies.
Falling down One Way Streets
Flying with no relief to you.
11. Summertime
Copyright © 1976 Greg Bullen
There’s a million things I’d like to say
There’s a hundred more I’d like to do
There’s a million things about this life that I believe
But I don’t know how to get to you.
I’ve known a lot of heartache in my life
But I try so hard to make it right
There’s a million things about this life that I can feel
But that don’t help me now.
Summertime,
It’s just got to be the time
When your baby’s gonna leave.
Find some shelter
And find some food to eat
Find somebody’s arms to lean on
Run to that farmhouse
In the meadow across the street
There’s nowhere else
There ain’t nobody else.
Summertime
It’s just got to be the time
When your baby’s gonna leave
And your baby’s gonna leave.
2. The Getaway

Well, I’ve got the flowers, babe
You’ve got the room at the Ritz
Our love is stronger than this
And ain’t it a shame?
That you and I have wandered ‘round
We don’t know the up side from down
Being here in this little town doesn’t help much.
We drove south from New York City
What a miracle to be so free
But we got caught sittin’ not so pretty
And our miracle disappeared.
Late in the night while I’ve been dreaming
A voice from the past we left behind
It screams in my ear “Boy, you’ve hit the ceiling”
But it’s somebody else’s house, it’s never mine.
So I’ve got the flowers, babe
And you’ve got the room at the Ritz
Our love is stronger than this
And ain’t it a shame?
That you and I have wandered ‘round
We don’t know the upside from down
There’s no grass as green as the sound of goodbye.
4. A Holiday Alone
Copyright © 1976 Greg Bullen
There’s a fog been a headin’ across the bay
There’s a hound dog callin’ but he’s far away
I guess it’s time for A Holiday Alone.
There’s a ship in the harbor goin’ out to sea
There’s a man on the bridge but he can’t hear me
I guess it’s true I’ll always be alone.
Well I lived with a woman some time ago
And she had me in the palm of her hand
If she left for a reason, I’ll never know
I just ran.
There’s a far better headin’ across the bay
There’s a hound dog callin’ but he’s far away
I guess it’s time for A Holiday Alone
There’s a face in the window across the way
There’s a smile on her lips but I cannot stay|
I guess it’s time for A Holiday Alone
Yes, it’s time for A Holiday Alone.
6. The Same As Me
Copyright © 1979 Greg Bullen
Now you can say that you are not The Same As Me
Your glass is empty and your eyes to glazed to see
But there you are
Sittin’ on that stool there at the bar.
A month of Sundays since the last time you were here
We talked the future – mine – and you sure bent my ear
You looked so grand
Everything about you spoke the man.
But now your boots ain’t gonna last
To fill the mold that you had cast
And still your anger comes too fast
When someone hurts you.
Your secret dreams have been laid bare
By enemies who aren’t even there
And when you fall into despair
Your friends desert you.
You used to tell me that I’d make it through somehow
I hate to ask, but do you still believe that now?
You shake your head
I remember everything you’ve said.
She didn’t know that you’d be taking it so hard
You never let her see you, least not the way you really are
You stood so tall
Maybe she just couldn’t help you at all.
But now your boots ain’t gonna last
To fill the mold that you had cast
And still your anger comes too fast
When someone hurts you.
Your secret dreams have been laid bare
By enemies who aren’t even there
And when you fall into despair
Your friends desert you.
Now you can say that you are not The Same As Me
But I can’t help but think that what you have to be
Is what you are
Another human lost, a fallen star.
8. Care Too Much
Copyright © 1979 Greg Bullen
I guess there’s nothin’ you can do
‘Cept to keep your love alive
Care enough to sympathize
And keep your head through it all,
You need a different point of view
Such an ordinary fray
Consequences, hard to say
Just don’t Care Too Much or you’ll fall,
Care Too Much and you’ll fall away
You’ll fall away.
Now you can’t help but fall
The way you carry on
It’s an egotistic need
Nobody’s done you wrong
If you can’t stand the pain
That’s tearin’ your heart in two
Then leaving the one you love
[Is the only thing you can do.]
You need a different point of view
Such an ordinary fray
Consequences, hard to say
Just don’t Care Too Much or you’ll fall,
Care Too Much and you’ll fall away.
Now you can’t help but fall
The time is goin’ fast
The longer that you wait
The less time you will have
If you can’t stand the pain
That’s tearin’ your heart in two
Then leavin’ the one you love
Is like runnin’ away (from you).
I guess there’s nothin’ you can do
‘Cept to keep your love alive
Care enough to sympathize
Just don’t Care Too Much or you’ll fall,
Care Too Much and you’ll fall away
You’ll fall away.
10. Patti Says
Copyright © 1976 Greg Bullen
Well Patti Says that we should go to France.
Patti Says that life is sweet there
So let’s take a chance.
Up in the mornin’
With the sun in the sky,
‘Though they were dry,
Now we could make a livin’
I can see it in her eyes.
Patti Says I move a bit too fast.
Patti Says that slowin’ down helps
To make the good things last.
“ ‘Cause when you eat your dinner
It’s a race between you and the dog,
Now he’s a little quicker
But he still can’t win ‘em all,
And he sets into barkin’
But you start soundin’ like a frog.”
Patti don’t say much at all that she don’t mean,
She don’t use much tact.
She just points her shoes towards the backside of my jeans.
Patti Says that we should go to France.
Patti Says America is lackin’ in romance.
We put ourselves together
Then we pull ourselves apart,
And nothin’ ever works
‘Cause we just ruin it from the start,
She thinks that basically
We just haven’t got a heart.
